SOMERVILLE, N.J., May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Hoechst Celanese Corporation today reported first-quarter net earnings of $53 million compared with $72 million for the same period last year. Net sales for the quarter were $1.75 billion compared with $1.88 billion for the first quarter of 1995.

"Our first quarter earnings declined as a result of a slowing economy that drove down prices for our commodity chemicals and volumes for some of our fibers, resins and film businesses," said Thomas F.
