Mexican President Felipe Calderon proposed life sentences for police involved in kidnappings, responding Thursday to an outcry over suspicions that several officers may have participated in the abduction and killing of a 14-year-old boy.
Calderon promised changes to a bill now before Congress to toughen penalties for severe crimes. Life sentences would be applied to people who kidnap minors or torture or kill kidnap victims, he said. Former police involved in abductions could also get life sentences.
The maximum sentence for most serious crimes in Mexico is now 50 years in prison.
