A SPLENDID performance of Vaughan Williams's London Symphony was the highlight of a concert, which saw the Birmingham debut of this 114-strong orchestra, founded in 1945, when it was the first national youth orchestra in the world,
The symphony, which was Vaughan Williams's personal favourite, was interpreted with all its contrasting themes, with exceptional expertise, by the musicians whose ages ranged from 13 to 21. The brilliant orchestral colour was a real treat, added to by the fine acoustics of the 'new' Town Hall.
