The face looks craggy these days, but, then, the face was always craggy. Davey Johnson grew up in the heat of Florida and Texas, and that heat seemed to wick the moisture from his face at a young age, leaving him with a hangdog expression before his time.
"I like it hot," he said this summer.
There was always a gleam in the eyes, though. Johnson always thought he could invent a way to beat you, from his days as a hitting-obsessed second baseman for the Baltimore Orioles and Atlanta Braves, through his tenures as manager for the New York Mets, Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers.
