AVI BioPharma Inc., of Corvallis, Ore., said UK's Medicine and Healthcare Product Regulatory Agency cleared the company to move forward with a its systemic trial of AVI-4658 for Duchenne muscular dystrophy treatment in ambulatory patients. Additionally, there is an open ethics extension, which has allowed identification and screening of subjects for the trial prior to receiving Gene Therapy Advisory Committee (GTAC) approval. AVI anticipates GTAC response such that the study could commence during the fourth quarter of this year.
