Americans like to think of themselves as a generous people. It was US. generosity, after all, that helped rebuild Europe and Japan and create the United Nations, the World Bank, World Health Organization and other international agencies dedicated to social and economic welfare. Even today, the U.S. public thinks it spends many, times more on foreign assistance than it actually does.
