A controversy has emerged as to whether the National Printing Ink Research Institute's research is relevant to the industry's future. Research on inks and inkrelated activities is done at several levels. Product-related proprietary research is undertaken by the larger ink companies in their own laboratories. On a lesser scale, small and medium-sized ink companies do limited research in support of their specific market segments.
