BREAST milk could keep stomach bugs at bay in the baby, scientists believe.

Research shows the milk is packed with sugary proteins capable of fighting E.coli and other dangerous germs.

The discovery could help explain why breast-fed babies are less likely to suffer diarrhoea than their bottle-fed counterparts.

The Australian and Swiss researchers found that the breast milk compounds, which are not found in cow's milk, can also tackle Helicobacter pylori, a stomach- dwelling bug which can cause ulcers and is linked to cancer.
