May 11--Oklahoma farmers will harvest their worst wheat crop in 25 years, according to official predictions released Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
In every area -- harvested acres, yield per acre and total crop -- numbers were below historic averages and even last year's poor crop.
Farmers will reap wheat on 4.5 million of the 6.9 million acres they planted last fall. Those fields would be expected to yield an average of 19 bushels with a total yield of 85.5 million bushels, according to the USDA.
"I don't think there is any surprise in that report," said Kim Anderson, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service grain marketing specialist.
