ValuJet Flight 592 crashed Saturday in the Florida Everglades, 950 miles from Hampton Roads, but the impact could reverberate strongly in Newport News.
The Atlanta-based carrier is the local airport's only provider of jet service, offering four daily flights to Atlanta from Newport News/Williamsburg International. In addition, ValuJet in February opened a reservations center in the airport's old terminal that employs more than 400 people.
While it's too early to tell what the local fallout from the crash might be, at a minimum ValuJet's business could dip, at least until nervous leisure travelers are reassured and coaxed back by the airline's budget fares.
