PHILADELPHIA _ The next coach of the 76ers will have a mandate to rebuild. John Lucas, the coach just fired, saw it as a matter of gutting the roster he had. The difference might be subtle and was sullied by injuries and circumstances, but it was enough to cost Lucas his job.
Brad Greenberg, the new general manager, told Lucas on Monday after a lengthy meeting last Thursday and theoretically taking the weekend to mull the situation. But make no mistake: This was decided long before Greenberg stepped to the podium for his own introductory news conference last Wednesday.
