To most Catholics outside Pittsburgh who have heard of him, Bishop Donald W. Wuerl is the man who, 10 years ago on orders from Rome, moved to Seattle as the uninvited auxiliary of and, in effect, replacement for Seattle Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen. Rome judged Hunthausen insufficiently firm in dealing with Catholic liberals, dissidents, Dignity gays and other groups that Seattle's right wing felt were out of control.
Today, Wuerl is the hard-driving, widely respected bishop of Pittsburgh -- and a local Sunday morning TV personality. His part in the anti-Hunthausen coup has, for the most part, faded from public memory. Most likely Hunthausen's greatest offense was ...
