Mary Guzman is a thirty-nine-year-old woman with three children, ages seventeen, fifteen, and twelve. She was in good medical condition until about six months ago, when she began to experience pain in her lower abdomen and irregular vaginal bleeding. After some hesitation, she went to the gynecology clinic at the city hospital. Dr. Roger Patel examined her at the clinic and found fibroids of the uterus. He discussed the problem and the treatment options with Ms. Guzman. She wanted to avoid surgery if at all possible.
