For two of the three acclaimed crime writers for TV's "The Wire," 2008 might be remembered as the year their ambitions grew even bigger. After wrapping up work on the saga about civic dysfunction in Baltimore, Richard Price published his novel "Lush Life," a gritty portrayal of the modern-day Lower East Side so layered it harks back to Steinbeck and Dreiser. In September, Dennis Lehane will step away from crime fiction to unveil "The Given Day," a thick historical novel set during the 1919 Boston police strike.
