UNITED NATIONS, Aug. 12, 2008 (IPS/GIN) -- Russia agreed to stop its military action in Georgia on Tuesday, shortly after the 15-member U.N. Security Council discussed a draft resolution aimed at urging Russia to stop its operation.

The decision came after Russia had already bombed and destroyed cities and military bases in Georgia for five days, leaving more than 2000 people dead.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Tuesday that the military had punished Georgia enough for its attack on South Ossetia. Western-allied Georgia had launched an offensive late Thursday to regain control over the Georgian province with close ties ...
