This collection of 26 essays by a team of 25 scholars seeks to 'consolidate recent gains and impose some order on the field of study', i.e. colonial and early American literature up to 1790. The editor is to be congratulated for the wide-ranging nature of the contributions which are divided into seven chronological parts.
