Early recorders of history and culture have either misinterpreted Native American women or neglected them. Moreover, image-makers reduced Native American women to the dichotomized roles of "princess" or "squaw." In the last two decades, many have romanticized Native Americans in general and Native American women in particular. New Agers, armed with their creative imaginations and the writings of Lynn Andrews, have created the image of "The Earth Mother." These fabricated images ignore the real-life experiences of Native American women past and present. What is needed are images that reflect authentic accounts of Native American women.
