CHARLTON - Like flowers that flourish in a hothouse environment, camaraderie, caring and creativity blossom in the lives of campers at Bement Camp. And the campers, like perennials, have returned year after year, generation after generation, for 60 years.
Bement Camp and Conference Center is a nonprofit organization owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Western Massachusetts and located on Jones Pond in Charlton. In 1948, land was purchased in Charlton Depot with a bequest by Mary V. Bement, and that summer, 98 boys and 68 girls attended camp at Bement for the first time, according to the camp's Web site.
