The Department of Education has dismissed recent newspaper reports suggesting that community service would become compulsory for university students in South Africa.
"Although various universities across the country have launched community service programmes, these will not become compulsory by 2010, as was earlier reported," said ministerial spokesperson Lunga Ngqengelele.
He said, however, that the department encouraged institutions to integrate community service into their academic activities.
