NEW YORK -- The home fragrance market is flourishing, thanks to new product concepts and materials that are capturing consumers' imaginations.

According to a recent study by Packaged Facts Inc., total home fragrance sales reached approximately $5.1 billion last year, and the market researcher projects that average annual increases of 3% over the next five years will push the market to $6 billion by 2012.

Much of the growth is coming from home air fresheners, which claimed 45% of sales in 2007, up from 36% in 2003. The biggest single-category growth engine has been Procter & Gamble Co.'s Febreze line, particularly its Noticeables scented oils.
