* Dennis Coday's article "Women priests carry on despite Vatican" (NCR, June 27) cites the Vatican General Decree issued by Archbishop Angelo Amato, secretary of the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, which states, "If he who has attempted to confer holy orders on a woman, or if the woman who has attempted to receive holy orders, is a member of the faithful ... they will be punished with major excommunication." It's puzzling that the decree cites Canon 1378 of the Code of Canon Law as its authority for the excommunication of a priest when he acts against the prescript of Canon 977, which states the absolution of an accomplice in a sin against the sixth commandment ...
