Writing the history of a single state is quite a challenge. No state, given its long, rich, and complicated history, is likely more challenging to chronicle than Virginia.
Peter Wallenstein begins his book by defending his use of the phrase "cradle of America" as a description more worthy of Virginia than Massachusetts.
