Remarkably, more than forty years of attention to women's history did not produce a serious full-length study of the "first lady of the Confederacy." In the last ten years a few articles have dealt with discrete aspects of Varina Davis's life, most notably, Carol K. Bleser's consideration of the Davis marriage (in Bleser and Lesley J.
