NOTHING concentrates the minds of Angelenos like a televised beating. The Riverside County policemen had kept their distance in an 80-mile (129km) high-speed chase of a pick-up truck crammed with suspected illegal immigrants from Mexico. After a similar chase in 1992 had ended in the deaths of six Mexicans, they did not want to make the pick-up crash.
