HOUSTON, May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Sonat Offshore Drilling Inc. (NYSE: RIG) today announced that the Company has received a firm long-term commitment from Amoco Exploration and Production (Amoco), a subsidiary of Amoco Corporation, which will enable Sonat Offshore Drilling to proceed with the construction of the world's largest and most technically advanced deepwater mobile offshore drilling rig. The rig, a dynamically positioned, dual-activity drillship, will be equipped pursuant to the contract to drill in water depths up to 7,000 feet; however, it will be capable of exploration and development drilling in water depths up to 10,000 feet.
