Now that telecom reform has finally passed, a whole new range of communications options is expected in the local service market. One technology that has been receiving a disproportionate level of attention is the cable modem, which could enable a cable TV operator to carry voice and/or high-speed data services on the existing cable plant.
Some analysts are already predicting that cable modems will supplant the telcos' ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) service which, while growing, has yet to gain a secure foothold.
