FIRST Minister Alex Salmond was last night accused of wasting taxpayers' money after it emerged he is to fly to the US to rub shoulders with the world's top golfers at the Ryder Cup.

The keen golfer, who will be accompanied by advisers and officials, insists the jaunt is a fact-finding mission ahead of the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.

But political opponents have asked why he needs to travel across the Atlantic next month when the Ryder Cup will be held in Wales in two years' time.

Last night, Labour leadership contender Andy Kerr accused the First Minister of 'grandstanding abroad' instead of running Scotland.
