Because it is the most extreme and outspoken groups within certain religions that often get the most attention, few should be surprised that many Americans are woefully ignorant of faiths other than their own.
Genuine interfaith dialogue, in which people learn about the theology, rituals and history of other faiths and learn to appreciate them not just tolerate them, can go a long way toward closing the knowledge gap. Those wanting to learn of instances when these kinds of conversations have worked should read Beyond Tolerance: Searching for Interfaith Understanding in America.
