May 17, 1954--
* The United States Supreme Court, in the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision, ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional on this day. The case was successfully argued by NAACP attorneys (l-r) George E.C. Hayes, Thurgood Marshall chief legal counsel, and James Nabrit. Marshall later became the first Black Supreme Court judge.
