I don't know who was responsible for the first jetdrive (it was probably invented by the Chinese--they seem to have invented just about everything). The modern jetdrive for boats can trace its origins back years to an irrigation pump, but since this is a 25-year anniversary article. I only have to go back 25 years.
A good place to start would be with the Buehler Turbo Jet. This axial flow pump opened the eyes of the general public to the possibility of jetboarding by making an assault on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. As I recall, the company finally made it on the second attempt.
