Everyone is familiar with the simple toy mechanical gyroscope that can be purchased at the local mall. Many people with engineering backgrounds are also aware that gyroscopes are used in navigation systems for commercial aircraft, military missile systems and spacecraft.
There are many possible applications for gyroscopes that fall between these two extremes. In these applications, absolute precision is not as critical as reliability and installed cost.
