Oakland, California has instituted a new curbside collection program designed with an eye toward stabilizing city solid waste rates, meeting mandatory recycling goals, reducing neighborhood noise and pollution, and reducing worker injuries.
Key to the new service is Waste Management of Alameda County's (WMAC) innovative "One Pass" collection vehicle, which increases efficiency and provides environmental benefits through less traffic, reduced fuel consumption, and fewer air emissions. The new 10-ton capacity truck - compared with 7 to 8 tons for standard solid waste collection vehicles -is expected to do the work of two or three vehicles by collecting and separating ...
