While any government initiative to stimulate demand in the housing sector should be encouraged, I'm not too excited by the rumoured alterations to Stamp Duty.

This story surfaced in The Sun where it was alleged that temporarily canning Stamp Duty was part of a package of measures being considered by the government.

But the Treasury and chancellor Alistair Darling denied the story and by the weekend the issue had become an example of government infighting rather than practical action.

Even if Stamp Duty had been suspended, to my mind it would have been a piecemeal response that would have done nothing to improve the market.
