THIS weekend's historic cancellation of the famous World Snail Championships due to heavy rain, came days after the death of the man who devised the event.
The championships have been running in Congham every year without fail since they were launched by Tom Elwes in the '60s, but were called off at the eleventh hour on Saturday when organisers realised the waterlogged cricket pitch where they are held as part of the church fete could not cope.
Ironically, snails love the wet weather but the conditions would not have been so kind to visitors.
