Some authors shy away from the designation "genre writer." Alan Furst embraces it. And why not? After all, his work--the author refers to his novels as "historical espionage"--has been favorably compared to some of the greats over the last two decades, including Graham Greene and Eric Ambler.
Furst is a New York City native who, after attending Oberlin College and Penn State for his bachelor's and master's degrees, respectively, worked in advertising and magazine writing for 15 years. The idea to write a "panoramic spy novel" came to him ...
