May 29--Ovonic Battery Co. will add 50 to 60 jobs over the next year to quadruple the number of electrodes it makes for use in nickel metal hydride batteries that power laptop computers, cellular phones and electric cars.

The $5-million-to-$8 million expansion includes new equipment and more space at Ovonic's complex of offices and manufacturing plants in Troy, company president Subhash Dhar said Tuesday.

Ovonic's recent agreement with Honda Motor Co. to supply batteries for its early 1997 electric car will lead to a boost in production for electric vehicle battery packs.
