LONG BEACH, Calif. _ The first Cambodian consulate in the United States is expected to open in Long Beach home to at least 20,000 Cambodian-Americans as early as next month, an official said Wednesday.
The honorary consulate, which would be established by the Cambodian government, would issue visas, renew passports, promote tourism and recruit investors to strengthen the nation's struggling economy.
``I'll represent Cambodia here in America,'' said Bunneang Khem, 50, who has been chosen as the consul but is still awaiting final approval to open the honorary consulate. ``Consulates are here for the people of their country.''
