Buying for defense systems is different than buying for other industries as purchase volumes are low, quality requirements are high and lifecycles are long.

Since the 2001 electronics industry downturn, most major and many small electronics manufacturing services (EMS) providers have increased their focus on the defense industry as a way to grow their businesses. The strategy is working as defense industry spending for systems is increasing and many major prime contractors are outsourcing printed circuit board assembly, system subassembly, and box build to EMS providers.
