ROME -- Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis of Monrovia, Liberia, in a recent meeting with the pope, spoke of the human disaster being played out in Liberia's capital as warring factions bring anarchy, violence and great damage to the church and its institutions.
After he told Pope John Paul II of his experiences at a private meeting May 3, Francis said he felt "greatly encouraged." The pope, Francis said, described his growing concern at the unfolding tragedy in Liberia, showed a good understanding of the situation there and assured Francis of his support and prayers for peace and for the people and church in Liberia.
