Alone and frightened, Steve Hawk, the editor of Surfer magazine, was goin' surfin' at Lunada Bay. A half-moon sliced from limestone cliffs that shelter an enchanting beach on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Lunada Bay is revered in Hawks world for the raw, untamed power of its waves. But it was fellow surfers, not surf, that be feared. "The idea to write a column," say Hawk, a lanky 40-year-old with wavy brown hair. "But when I was driving up there, I was scared shitless - worried about my personal safety, afraid of being humiliated."
