BEIJING - Shawn Johnson felt sick. The practices and competitions over the course of the Olympics had worn her down, and now, facing her last event and eager for her first gold medal, she kept running through her balance beam routine, and it kept getting worse.
Seven times the West Des Moines, Iowa, native tried to perfect her routine, seven times she wound up frustrated, until her beloved coach, Beijing-born Liang Chow, finally sat her down like a slumping quarterback, hoping she could regain her equilibrium.
