SANTA CRUZ, Calif. _ Construction got underway Friday in Santa Cruz on the nation's first full-time center for rescuing marine wildlife injured by oil spills.
California Department of Fish and Game and University of California, Santa Cruz officials broke ground with ceremonial gold-colored shovels at the bluff-top site near Long Marine Laboratory.
When it is completed next summer, the $5 million, 18,000-square-foot center will be the state's headquarters for rescuing oil-soaked sea otters, seabirds and other marine life.
