The Air Force could save between $25 million and $115 million if it consolidated its fighter aircraft squadrons, the General Accounting Office says in a report issued in early May.
"The Air Force could modify its current configuration of fighter aircraft in a more cost-effective manner to increase the number of squadrons with 24 aircraft," the report says.
The report, Air Force Aircraft: Consolidating Fighter Squadrons Could Reduce Costs, was requested by Rep. John Kasich (R-Ohio), Rep. Herb Bateman (R-Va.), and Rep. Norman Sisisky (D-Va.). The review was conducted from February 1995 to February 1996.
