MORPETH Town Hall could be closed as a repairs backlog threatens its future.
Officials have warned that urgent investment is needed in the structure of the landmark building if it is to have any chance of staying open to the public.
But with repairs estimates running to hundreds of thousands of pounds, Castle Morpeth councillors have been told they could have little choice but to shut down the historic premises until extra cash can be found.
Council Director of Property and Resources Barry Scarr said: "The best we can do is inform councillors of the structural state of the Town Hall and give them some options.
