According to Psychoanalytic theory, fixation at the oral stage of psychosexual development influences the etiology and dynamics of depression (Abraham, 1927/1965; Fenichel, 1946; Freud, 1917/1957, 1933/1964; Glover, 1925). A number of studies of both normal and clinical samples, using various measures of orality and depressive symptoms, have provided empirical support.
Two studies have used students to examine this prediction.
