After his quintuple bypass surgery in 1987, Larry King got to thinking, "How much would this operation have cost me if I didn't have insurance to cover it?"
The CNN interviewer immediately founded the Larry King Cardiac Foundation to provide heart bypass operations for people of limited means and inadequate insurance. The fund-raising started small with an event featuring Tommy Lasorda and Johnny Unitas. More recently, the event has gone bicoastal, with a show each year in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., and featuring headliners including Celine Dion and Ricky Martin.
