Vitamin C, more than any other nutrient, provokes heated debate over how much of the vitamin is enough to prevent deficiency, how much is optimal and how much is too much. A new government study makes progress toward resolving the differences between the pro-megadose forces and RDA-level supporters by coming down squarely in the middle.
The new research, from the National Institutes of Health, was designed to learn how various vitamin C dosages affect absorption, blood and tissue concentrations and excretion of the vitamin, and to determine optimal availability of the vitamin to the body (bioavailability) as well as what dose might be toxic.
