In a controversial move, the Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first new prescription weight-loss drug in more than 20 years. The drug, dexfenfluramine, is chemically related to fenfluramine, a short-term appetite suppressant that's been sold since 1973 under the brand name Pondimin. The difference? Dexfenfluramine is considered safer and possibly more effective. It will be sold by Wyeth- Ayerst under the brand name Redux.
Redux works by raising the levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, which fools the body into thinking it's full. But you can't fool all the people all the time, and Redux doesn't. Its makers recommend that anyone who ...
