A cool spring in the Northeast notwithstanding, expectations are this will be another excellent year for selling room air conditioners.

The past three hot summers have put consumers and dealers in the mood to buy early. Preseason business was described as good to heavy.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers reported shipments were the biggest ever for an April, putting the year to date 18 percent ahead of the like four months in 1995. One executive said the strength persisted: early May was up 14 percent.
