The board of Exxaro Resources has approved a R9-billion capital expenditure to expand the Grootegeluk coalmine and plant to meet the demand for coal from Eskom s new Medupi power station, which is under construction in South Africa s Limpopo province.
Exxaro has concluded the coal-supply agreement for the first three 800-MW power units of the six-unit Medupi and is finalising the agreement on the second three 800-MW units.
CFO Dirk Van Staden assures, however, that the R9-billion the Exxaro board has approved for the expansion of the Grootegeluk coal plant and mine covers all six units.
